چکیده

High energy γ-ray astronomy has been established during the last decade through the launch of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) and the success of its ground-based counterpart, the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique. In the aftermath of their important and surprising scientific results a worldwide effort developing and designing new generation atmospheric Cherenkov detectors is underway. These novel instruments will have higher sensitivity at E > 250 GeV, but most importantly, will be able to close the unexplored energy gap between 20 GeV and 250 GeV. Several ground-based detectors are proposed or under construction. Aspects of the techniques used and sensitivity are discussed in this overview paper. The instruments cover largely complementary energy ranges and together are expected to explore the γ-ray sky between 20 GeV and 100 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity.

for the H.E.S.S. Collaboration

The H.E.S.S. experiment (High Energy Stereoscopic System) is a new generation atmospheric Cherenkov detector measuring high-energy (> 100 GeV) gamma radiation from the Universe. This paper briefly explains the imaging Cherenkov technique and describes the H.E.S.S. project and its current status.

TeV γ-ray Astronomy in the new Millennium

The field of TeV gamma-ray astronomy is reviewed with emphasis on its relation to the origin of cosmic rays. The discovery of TeV photons from supernova remnants and active galaxies has provided the first direct observational link between specific astrophysical objects and particle production at the TeV scale. TeV γ-ray observations constrain the high end of the electromagnetic spectrum, a regi...

Review of the Solar Array Telescopes

For several years the only experiments sensitive to astrophysical gamma rays with energies beyond the reach of EGRET but below that of the Cherenkov imaging telescopes have been the ”solar tower” detectors. They use > 2000 m mirror areas to sample the Cherenkov wavefront generated by < 100 GeV gamma rays, obtaining Crab sensitivities of more than 6σ in one ON-source hour. I will review the hist...

The Atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging Technique for Very High Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

One of the last frontiers of the gamma-ray sky is that characterized by the distribution of TeV photons. These photons can be detected relatively easily with ground-based detectors (constituting a TeV ”window” in the atmosphere) and thus the detection of sources did not have to await the availability of space platforms. In practice although the technology was available at an early date, it requ...

Operating Water Cherenkov Detectors in high altitude sites for the Large Aperture GRB Observatory

Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) are efficient detectors for detecting GRBs in the 10 GeV 1 TeV energy range using the single particle technique, given their sensitivity to low energy secondary photons produced by high energy photons when cascading in the atmosphere. The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) operates arrays of WCD in high altitude sites (above 4500 m a.s.l.) in Bolivia, Mexico a...
